Get to know Skye, an extraordinary border collie, who has made an unforgettable impact in the field of mountain rescue. Over the course of her 11-year career, this highly dedicated search dog successfully conducted 200 searches, solidifying her position as one of the most reliable search dogs in the UK. Her remarkable achievements have not gone unnoticed, as she is soon to be presented with the highly esteemed PDSA Order of Merit, commonly known as the ‘animal OBE’, in recognition of her exemplary service.
Skye, together with handler John Leadbetter, was an intrepid member of search and rescue missions that tirelessly searched for missing individuals. Enduring all kinds of weather conditions, they worked together seamlessly to accomplish their goals. Skye began her career as a puppy with the Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team and underwent training with the Duddon and Furness MRT before gaining recognition as a graded search dog. Later on, she joined the Langdale and Ambleside MRT, followed by the Kendal MRT, where she continued her admirable service.
According to Mr. Leadbetter, Skye is more than just a search and rescue dog, she is his lifelong partner and best friend on the hills. He feels humbled to witness Skye being honored with the PDSA Order of Merit, a testament to the tireless efforts of search dogs and their teams in ensuring mountain safety. Skye’s impact extends beyond her search and rescue work as she also served as an ambassador for the cause, generating crucial funding and raising awareness. Being the 36th recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit, Skye joins the ranks of animals recognized for their exceptional contributions to society. The prestigious award was established by PDSA in 2014 to acknowledge animals that go above and beyond their call of duty.
Jan McLoughlin, the director general of PDSA, has bestowed the Order of Merit upon Skye with immense pride. This prestigious award recognizes Skye’s extraordinary abilities and unwavering commitment. Skye’s journey has been remarkable, as she has not only saved lives in perilous situations but also served as a source of inspiration for fundraising and awareness campaigns.
Starting with her training under the Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team, Skye’s search and rescue missions took her far and wide across the Lake District, Lancashire, the Pennines, and even Scotland, culminating in her qualification with the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dog Association.
As Skye is about to reach her 16th birthday, she is now basking in a peaceful retirement with the Leadbetter family. Although she may not be as quick as she used to be, her enthusiasm for life remains strong, and she still loves spending time in the mountains and hills that she once worked so hard to protect.
